Anonymous, I used layer masks to get soft borders (they are available in PSE 9 and up and CS). I copied both photos and used different blending modes to get a nice result. Here I used Hard Light for the Original photo and multiply on the copy layer and I lowered the opacity of that one.
Sidenote, you can also get the blended effect by making a clipping mask with any brush in Photoshop and then clipping your photo to it, and setting overlay or another layer style.
